Eagle River Golf Course is a beautiful 18 hole facility in the heart of Eagle River Wisconsin. Early settlers started coming to the area in the mid 1850’s. Eagle River was incorporated as a city in 1937 and the golf course was actually built 12 years earlier in 1925. People traveled mostly by train back in those days to get to the Northwoods. Now it’s approximately a 3 hour drive from Green Bay and 5 hours from both Milwaukee and Minneapolis.
In the early 1920’s a journalist wrote: “Northern Wisconsin’s fame as a golfing territory has lately become established with noted golf players. Where a few years ago brush, trees and unbroken ground confronted the visitor to the North Woods, today one may, it’s safe to say, find some of the sportiest courses in the unbroken wilds and fitted for natural golf advantage by Mother Nature centuries ago.”
Many famous people played golf in the area over the years to include President Eisenhower, Walter Hagen, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Crawford, and Mayor Kelly from Chicago (always with his bodyguard.) Gangsters while hiding in the Northwoods also enjoyed a round like Al Capone, “Machine Gun” Jack McGurn, Fred “The Killer” Burke and Jake “Greasy Thumb” Guzik. Their bags not only included clubs and whiskey but often a sawed off shotgun as well.
Playing golf here is like going back in time not just because the course was built almost 100 years ago and a lot of Chicago gangsters used to gamble on these same grounds but it has an old world charm. With it’s rolling fairways and sloping greens, abundance of old growth timber and hundreds of magnificient deciduous trees and sparkling water it’s easy to lose yourself in the quiet grandeur of the outdoors. While playing you will see a plethora of bird species and waterfowl, most likely bald eagles, deer and an occasional fox.
The course was originally built as 9 holes and then redesigned as an 18 hole course in 1988. It has a wonderful, big practice facility to include a grass tee range, practice green, chipping area and practice bunker.
